Fever (also known as pyrexia) is a frequent medical sign that describes an increase in internal body temperature to levels above normal. It is a normal response to a variety of conditions, the most common of which is infection, when the immune system detecting an infectious agent, such as a bacterium or virus.
Some parents got panic when their child got fever, well it's not really necessary because nearly every child will develop a fever at some point, and the challenge for parents is to know when to be concerned.
These are things i do when my children got fever:
- I encourage her to drink an adequate amount of fluids to prevent dehydration (not enough fluid in the body) and it can help the body cool itself. Fluids such as milk (cow's or breast), formula, and water should be offered frequently, chicken soup is good to give to them too.
- Dress her in light-wearing clothes. Overdressing or too many clothes or blankets can trap body heat and increase the child's temperature.
- When the temperature is above 37.5ºC, i give her medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
- If she has chills, i give her an extra blanket and remove it when the chills stop.
- I do sponging to help cooling the body using a damp washcloth to apply comfortably warm (30ºC) water to the entire body and on the forehead. Cooling occurs as water evaporates from the skin surface.
- Go to my doctor if the fever rises to above 39.5ºC or lasts for more than 2 days or if she appears ill (eg, fussy, limp, refusing to drink fluids, no eating at all).
